Unsung Heroes: The Women Who Build in Silence

Leya Mnangagwa journalling in natural light, reflecting the quiet strength of women who build in silence
Not all heroes stand on stages. Some wake before dawn, pray in private, sacrifice quietly and build foundations no one sees. This is for the women who build in silence.

As Women’s Day approaches, I find myself thinking about the women we do not celebrate loudly enough.

While many headlines highlight women on stages or trending online, my thoughts are drawn elsewhere. I am thinking about the women who build in silence.

The Strength We Rarely Applaud

Across our communities, strength often looks ordinary.

It looks like the mother who wakes before everyone else and rests last. It looks like the woman who works away from home all week so her family can thrive. It looks like the vendor who arrives at the market before sunrise to pay school fees and put food on the table.

Although these women rarely announce their sacrifices, they carry them with quiet resolve. As a result, families stand firm and communities remain stable.

In many ways, their impact speaks louder than applause ever could.

Why Silence Does Not Mean Weakness

Some of the strongest women I know are not the loudest. Instead of competing for attention, they focus on responsibility. Rather than seeking validation from the world, they anchor themselves in faith.

For them, approval does not come from public recognition. It comes from God.

Because of this foundation, they commit fully to their families, their faith and their work. Day by day, they choose growth over comfort and discipline over distraction.

There is something sacred about that choice. When a woman builds quietly, she chooses prayer over panic. She chooses consistency over applause. Most importantly, she chooses purpose over pressure.

The Invisible Weight Women Carry

As women, we often carry more than we express. We stretch beyond our limits and absorb pressures that go unseen. Even so, warmth still fills our homes, stability still shapes our families and strength still flows into our communities.

Women who build in silence become emotional anchors. At the same time, they act as quiet strategists and unseen intercessors. Frequently, they do all of this while fighting private battles.

Yet they continue.

The Power of Consistency

The world celebrates visibility. However, transformation usually happens in private.

A whispered prayer.
A repeated routine.
A decision to show up again tomorrow.

Through these small, faithful actions, legacies are formed.

When women who build in silence remain steady, they lay foundations that future generations will stand on. Even if no one publicly recognises them, their influence multiplies.

A Women’s Day Reflection

Therefore, as we approach Women’s Day, I choose to honour the women who build in silence.

I honour the mothers holding families together. I honour the sisters praying in private. I honour the friends who remain steady, even when they feel tired.

And if no one has told you lately, I see you.

May God strengthen you where you feel unseen. May He refresh you when you are weary. Above all, may He remind you that nothing done in love is ever wasted.

Your quiet strength matters more than you know.
